Professor and Researcher at the Polytechnic University of Catalonia (UPC)

Ulises Cortés (1960) is a Full Professor of Artificial Intelligence at the Polytechnic University of Catalonia (since 2006) and Scientific Coordinator of the High-Performance Artificial Intelligence group at the Barcelona Supercomputing Center (since 2017). He received the 2018 Mexican Distinguished Award, granted by the Institute for Mexicans Abroad (IME) of the Mexican Ministry of Foreign Affairs.

Since 2018, he has been an emeritus member (Fellow) of the Mexican Society for Artificial Intelligence (SMIA) and a member of the Ethics Observatory in Artificial Intelligence of Catalonia and the Ethics Committee of the Polytechnic University of Catalonia. He is also a member of the Executive Committee of the European Association for Artificial Intelligence (EurAI); a member of the National System of Researchers Level III (CONACyT-Mexico); and a participant as an expert from Mexico in the Data Governance working group of the Global Partnership on Artificial Intelligence (GPAI-OECD). He was awarded an honorary doctorate by the University of Girona in 2023.
